Merlin : Representation of Class.

                                            Merlin

Camera
Empowering angle of shot, mid shot.
screen time
scrambling shots never at worms-eye view
at fighting scene--> upper class
always missing + hitting

Sound
traditional eery soundtrack
strong foley
build up tension
dialogue--> upper class more eloquent rather than common
Foley -->emphasizing manual labour

Editing
Fast paced on fight scene to show experience
normal order of narrative to show organisation,
pre-planned,
perfect

Mise En Scene
traditional costume
good lighting on upper class
clear costume difference between classes and house decorations
stain glass window
valuable book/decorations

Supports the stereotype of upper but subverts lower as he was powerful (use of magic)

  1. A good attempt Mel; you make some original and fascinating points, which is great.

    - Your analysis needs to be in much more depth. Every observation you make needs to then explore what that shows about class and status. Some of your editing PEEs do this, but there is still room for more. Don't just think about HOW it is represented, but WHY. What message is the institution conveying? What do the audience feel? PUSH your analysis much further. You are definitely capable of this!
    - Check the accuracy of your statements - there are LOADS of SFX! What about all the magic??
    - Work on your timing...it's crucial you get more points about camera work in there.

    1. Okay. I will practice deepening my analysis and exploring my observations. I need to learn some more terminology.

  2. Mel, have the lessons we've now had on editing and sound terminology helped you feel more confident with this?
