Hotel Babylon.

Sound

At this part the sound is of a tension building background music track this makes the audience feel sympathetic for the characters because the tension building music must be what is building up in their heads, wondering whether or not they are going to get caught and sent back to their country of poverty. This leaves questions with the audience with what will happen next. You can also hear the screaming in the background of those panicking.

 Editing

They don't get much screen time on their own to show their lack of individuality and importance. Compared to the white characters as a whole their scenes are always fast paced and focussed on gathering them all rather than investigating their individual jobs.

 Mise En Scene

The immigrants are dressed in cleaners uniform to remind the audience that they don't have a real job but that they are going to be doing dirty jobs, this lowers their value. The lighting isn't very good here to show that they are underground in a badly lit environment.

Camera

This shot makes the characters look like they are behind bars, or possibly in a cage which they cannot escape from. This shows the audience that these immigrants are constantly thought of to be less than human and that they don't have freedom.

Sound

In this scene there is a lot of shattering noises and fast paced footsteps to mimick a fast process of thought of what to do in this situation. you can sense the emotion and desperation in their voices whilst they are trying to gather everyone. this shows that they are very close somewhat like a family that they want to protect eachother.

Camera

In this scene, although the distressed lady is gathering all of the immigrants it seems very routine-like which supports the idea of immigrants being treated unlike humans as they have expected this to happen they have clearly had to rehearse it. The angle shown is from low down to make them seem like they are in control of the current situation meaning they have the opportunity now to hide as many people which they are doing.

Editing

The transition of shots here are very rushed to add emphasis to the importance of hiding all the immigrants, which supports the stereotype of their lives constantly being in danger and having to rush to hide from their manual labour jobs. Parallel editing is used in this scene as the editor crosscuts over to the other immigrant who is in the corridor awaiting what is going to happen next. By using this editing technique, it makes the audience anxious and brings tension.

Mise En Scene

Two characters shown in this screenshot are wearing red. This signifies danger and this shows that the immigrants are always surrounded by danger, it also supports the stereotypes of how immigrants are all in fear of the danger of being caught somewhere they shouldn't be or doing something they legally aren't allowed to do whether its helpful and clean or not. You can see that the receptionist is wearing a red shade brighter than the other, this is because as she is the one in charge of hiding all the illegal immigrants she is technically going the most against the law which would suggest that she would get the worst consequence. There is also a character in this scene who is wearing white... White is associated with light, goodness, innocence, purity and virginity. It is considered to be the colour of perfection and is known to be surrounded by safety purity and cleanliness which as apposed to black usually has a positive connotation, This confuses the audience as clearly you wouldn't expect a person that is seen to be harmful or breaking laws to be wearing such a colour.

Sound
during this scene, there are lots of foley noises in the background such as some crying noises clearly to show that the immigrants in the crowded room are panicking about being taken away, they are doing that because they want to continue to work there. There is some whispering going on during this scene which suggests that some of the immigrants may be praying to their god that they don't get taken, this shows that their working environment is accepting of all cultures as they are comfortable to pray aloud.

Camera
The shots done inside the room used to hide in are fairly slow paced. In this scene the receptionist is counting to make sure they have got everyone inside and to see whether or not they have left anyone behind, during this scene the shots go to close ups of the characters faces to show their panicked looks however it is unclear whether they are panicking/looking like this due to their possible leaving behind of a person (since it seems quite rehearsed) or just because of the unfortunate situation they are in.

Editing
There is not many clear editing things to talk about here.

Mise En Scene

The three characters that are in the foreground of the shot are all wearing white smart uniforms, this would suggest that they have respectable jobs that require them to look moderately presentable therefore suggesting that they come into contact with people of the public and the white coloured uniform suggests purity and lack of harm. The characters all look like they are praying. The lady to the left has her hand on her heart to show that she may be frightened and her heart may be beating fast. The lady in the middle has both hands concealing her chest in a sympathetic way clearly praying that 'Ibrahim' doesn't get caught by the immigration officers. The man to the far right is anxiously staring at the door whilst holding his hands in prayer to show sympathy for the man that has been left behind, this shows that all these characters are genuinely feeling sorry for the man that they know is gonna get an injustice served to him.

Camera

This scene shows a close up of a male who acts as a doctor. He is dressed in the less important and clean-looking uniform which would suggest that he is unimportant however his helpful knowledge of what to do in the situation of a fainting. The angle of this shot is level with the character playing a doctor to show that all importance is based on him, this is not something that would happen usually due to the usual stereotype of immigrants, meaning that it subverts the stereotype. The movement is very swift on all shots of the characters which shows equality and friendship.

Editing

The transitions in this scene is very basic. The order of narrative is basic to emphasize the routine-like days that these immigrant workers have. Lack of complication could suggest that things have to be done in a straight forward manner as some of the foreign workers may not understand a complex style due to language barriers, this raises an issue with having immigrant workers doing a professional role. The pace is fast to give the character that has just fainted importance, as in despite them not being able to get proper help (because that would require leaving the room) they are doing everything they can to help her. This supports the danger of having immigrant workers, as they are putting the health of the lady that passes out second to them all getting caught. No SFX are used in this scene. Screen time here is mainly on the lady that has collapsed, this brings our attention to her and obviously concerns for her health

Sound

The background noise is building tension and creating a clash to mimick what the characters may be feeling, the characters are all silent to show that they are worried. This background music is not on a high volume because as the characters are hiding, they don't want to draw attention to themselves possibly giving themselves away. The characters surrounding the collapsed lady show that they care about her by showing their emotion through dialogue and facial expressions.

ADAM
'whats wrong with her?'
shes diabetic, shes having a hypoglycemic attack
'What do we do?'
'We cant take her out there, they'll take her, they'll take all of you'

The dialogue shown above shows that the receptionist is very panicked and is trying to find out what to do by directly asking the doctor figure 'What do we do?' and 'Whats wrong with her?' she follows with 'We cant take her out there, they'll take her, they'll take all of you' this subverts the stereotype of immigrants because they are usually seen to be unhelpful and the receptionist wouldn't be worried about her workers being taken unless she needed them.

Mise En Scene

wearing red. This signifies danger and this shows that the immigrants are always surrounded by danger, it also supports the stereotypes of how immigrants are all in fear of the danger of being caught somewhere they shouldn't be or doing something they legally aren't allowed to do whether its helpful and clean or not. There is also a character in this scene who is wearing white... White is associated with light, goodness, innocence, purity and virginity. It is considered to be the colour of perfection. The lighting is very naturalistic. The actors are playing very average roles. Minimal makeup to make it look natural.

Sound
Here this scene is very quiet, this is because all the characters that are in here are sad because the receptionist is clearing out the locker of 'Ibrahim' who was the unfortunate immigrant that got caught during the raid. Druing this scene there is parallel music playing to set the mood of sadness with some slow instrumental backing music. The emotion is also sensed with the music.
Camera
All the characters are somewhere in the centre of the frame, this is to show that they are all as important as eachother, they are standing close to eachother to show they are comfortable around eachother which would suggest that they have been working together for a while to have formed a bond with this 'Ibrahim'. The movement is very slow in this shot to similarly mimick the slow sad feeling the characters are experiencing.

Editing
The receptionist now has the most amount of screentime as she is the leader of all of the immigrant workers. The attention goes back to her and the immigrant workers continue being a group rather than individuals, you can tell this because they rarely have any individual importance apart from the doctor in prev scenes. The pace similarly slows down as it is a sad moment that they are experiencing, this could suggest that this man has been working here for a long time because they are finding it difficult to get over.

Mise En Scene

The man to the far right is anxiously staring at the door whilst holding his hands in prayer to show sympathy for the man that has been left behind, this shows that all these characters are genuinely feeling sorry for the man that they know is gonna get an injustice served to him.
